Game of Marbles
Apr 27 2008, 8:34 PM EDT When I was in the 4 th thru the 8 th grade at McGregor School in Canton Ohio ( they just demolished it last year ) .our whole recess was taken up with marble games. I wasn`t too good to start with ,but got better .I was so thrilled one year, that I only had to beat one more guy, to be the school rep. in the city tournament ,( but of course I lost ) When My Mother passed away a couple years ago,I found my marbles ,even my best "shooters " in a 39 oz. coffee can in the attic . Anyone care for a game of marbles ??? Bernie 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Game of Marbles
May 1 2008, 9:17 PM EDT Great poem! And fun stories re marbles. By the time I was in school, marbles were not the big game that they used to be. However... my father had a wooden box hidden away in a tiny, obscure storage closet which could only be accessed by reaching behind a huge 3-corner cupboard which stood in front of it. My 6-year-old arms could barely make it and I had to haul a stool to stand on to reach the shelf where this treasure resided. My dad, being about 46 at the time, was still quite possessive of his marbles! So I was reprimanded more than once for getting into them. Seems he was quite a champ when he was in school - and those marbles were representative of many good memories. When both he and my mom had passed on, I immediately laid claim to that treasured box of beautiful cat's eyes, aggies, mica and more. Now my grandchildren are enjoying them and many games of marbles are being resurrected via internet searches. Leila Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Game of Marbles
May 5 2008, 9:55 PM EDT I should have added this to the last story Every year when I tilled up my garden in Ohio ,I came up with several marbles ,from very old glass ,to the old ceramic ,to clay ones from real old times .I have an old half pint cream bottle full of them . It shows almost a complete history of marbles. The house I lived in was over 100 yr`s old ,and during the coal mining days I`m told it sat on sand stones a couple feet or so off the ground .When they dug the basement for it they dumped the dirt where I had my garden .I can just see a couple of kids sitting under the house in the shade ,playing marbles. I even found pieces of old (smoking ,pipes ) .If I would have done a real archaeology dig ,hard telling what I would Have found . Bernie 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
