General Morgan
Morgan was the commander of a band of Virginia sharpshooters in the Revolution. At the outbreak of the Revolution, he was commissioned a captain in the Continental Army and he went with General Benedict Arnold on the 1775 expedition against Quebec. On this campaign, he distinguished himself as commander after Arnold was wounded.
He fought at Saratoga in the fall of 1777. He and his Virginia riflemen played a major part in defeating the British at Freeman's Farm and Bennis Heights. On January 17, 1781, he was promoted to Brigadier General.
The particulars of the Battle of Cowpens are told in the book The Hornet's Nest by former president Jimmy Carter. General Daniel Morgan is a very interesting character and the county was probably named for him since he was a friend of George Washingon.
And, no, the county is not named for John Hunt Morgan, Confederate spy and guerrila fighter, but that is a different story since he did cross through Morgan County at one point.
